U.S. Government Sponsored Scholarships
Benjamin A. Gilman International ScholarshipThe Gilman Scholarship Program broadens the student population that studies and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. The program aims to encourage students to study and intern in a diverse array of countries or areas and world regions. Veterans of military service are encouraged to apply, and preference is given to veterans when other factors are equivalent.
Boren Scholarship
As an initiative of the National Security Education Program, Boren Scholarships provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. These regions include Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Freeman Asia Scholarship
This program is designed to support U.S. based undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia, its peoples, and its cultures. Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses/communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program's goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States. If you are studying abroad in one of the following countries, you are eligible for this scholarship: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam.
Fulbright UK Summer Institutes
These institutes are three to four week programs for U.S. undergraduate students. Participants will explore the culture, heritage, and history of the UK while experiencing higher education at a United Kingdom university. Depending on the institute, students will have the following opportunities:
- Study alongside leading academics and professionals
- Develop knowledge in specific fields
- Experience cultural and social events
- Visit UK cultural sites and areas of scenic beauty
- Receive credit to transfer to their home institution
- Meet people from different backgrounds and cultures
- Become an ambassador for studying in the UK, for the Fulbright Commission and their host institutions
Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible. The Fulbright organizations offers:
- Study/Research: Applicants for Study/Research awards design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries, and can be applied to the following categories:
- Academic
- Creative & Performing Arts
- English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program: These programs place participants in classrooms abroad to provide assistance to the local English teachers. ETAs help teach English language while serving as cultural ambassadors for the U.S. The age and academic level of the students varies by country, ranging from kindergarten to university level. Applicants for ETA Programs can only apply to one country.
- Fulbright-National Geographic Storytelling Fellowship: As a component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, this fellowship provides opportunities for selected Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research grantees to participate in an academic year of storytelling on a globally significant theme.
Non-Governmental Scholarships
The American-Scandinavian FoundationThe American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) offers fellowships and grants to individuals to pursue research, study, or creative arts projects in one or more Scandinavian country for up to one year. Grants are considered suitable for post-graduate scholars, professionals, and candidates in the arts to carry out research or study visits of one to three months duration. Fellowships are intended to support a year-long stay. Priority is given to candidates at the graduate level for dissertation-related study or research.
Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
The Bridging Scholarship Program is accepting applications from American students participating in study abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized credit-bearing exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends depending on the length of their study program in Japan, and the scholarships are funded by donations from corporations, individuals, and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation.

Education New Zealand: Generation Study Abroad
Generation Study Abroad students come to New Zealand for a great education and an incredible adventure. It is a place where learning is personalized and easily tailored, where independent thought is welcomed, and where innovation is encouraged. Education New Zealand and New Zealand tertiary institutions are supporting Generation Study Abroad students with excellence and travel awards. There are three different scholarships available for semester study in New Zealand:
- Education New Zealand Study Abroad Travel Awards (ENZTA)
- Generation Study Abroad New Zealand Universities Excellence Awards (NZUEA)
- Generation Study Abroad New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Excellence Awards (NZITPEA)
FEA's application is entirely online, and includes an online application form, financial aid form (completed by the financial aid office), unofficial transcript, and recommendation letter. If you are a student going abroad with one of our Access Partners, we advise you to select that Access Partner when prompted on your application. FEA awards funds to students planning to study abroad on academically rigorous programs with a strong preference for underrepresented students. In addition to the general scholarships, they also award the Rainbow Scholarship which supports a deserving LGBTQ student who aims to participate in an education abroad program. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting minority, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs.
German Universities of Applied Sciences 7 (UAS7)
UAS7 offers undergraduates from U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities the possibility to experience the practice oriented education of German universities of applied sciences. Students can select one of the top seven university locations throughout Germany (Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Münster, or Osnabrück) to participate in a Study Program (SP) and/or Internship Program (IP).

Killam Fellowships Program Open Competition
Killam Fellowship Program is an excellent opportunity for U.S. students to spend one semester or a full academic year at a university in Canada.
The Mitchell Scholarship Program
The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honor former U.S. Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

The PLATO project is continuing to collect resources and information to help increase participation by diverse students in study abroad.
Scott's Cheap Flights
This scholarship is open to any citizen and/or resident of the United States (and its territories and possessions) that is enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning. All other entries will be disqualified.

Tortuga Backpacks

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. At Tortuga, our mission is to help you live on your terms, including students studying abroad. When customers purchase luggage from us for their trips, they are “paying it forward” by funding scholarships for students like you. Only U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and current students studying in the U.S. on a student visa are eligible.
Udall Foundation
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. Only U.S. Citizens, Nationals, and Permanent Residents are eligible.
Vertical Flight Foundation
Each year, Vertical Flight Foundation (VFF) scholarships are awarded to college students demonstrating an interest in pursuing engineering related careers in vertical flight technology. The Foundation scholarship awards are made possible solely by tax deductible donations that have been established and contribute to an endowment. The scholarships are solely merit-based.
